Mentoring Committee

The Exempt Staff Senate (ESS) Mentoring Program is set up to provide an opportunity for seasoned staff to share their knowledge, resources, expertise, experience, values, and skills with other staff members across campus. Mentors will be a friendly resource to mentees, providing them with coaching, insight, and encouragement.

The overall goals are to increase staff morale, create avenues to develop new relationships, and build a stronger, more cohesive community at UMBC.

Program Model & Commitment

The program operates on a structured, 12-month cycle (July 1–June 30) designed for impact and accountability.

  • Eligibility: All participants must be classified as exempt staff to participate in the program

  • Process: Applications open in April, followed by a strategic networking and matching process in May/June. Mentoring pairs engage in a year-long cohort experience.

  • Participant Expectations: Mentors act as advocates and positive role models, while mentees are empowered to drive their professional development. Both parties commit to high standards of integrity, confidentiality, and mutual respect. This program is entirely voluntary.

ESS Committees are open to all exempt staff members. If you are interested in joining a committee, contact ess@umbc.edu or the committee chair directly.
